Step 1: Take the 40-Hour Professional Mediation Training
The training will provide you with an understanding of interest-based mediation, the mediation process, conflict styles, anger arousal, and how to differentiate between the surface issues of a conflict and the underlying needs and values.
Over the course of the 40 hours of training, you will participate in interactive learning and practice mediator communication skills and roles, such as agenda building, facilitation of negotiation, and dealing with power imbalances. You will learn about the dynamics of the co-mediation model and and co-mediate a complete mock mediation.

Step 2: Get Certified
After completing the training, you will:

- Complete and submit a take-home exam
- Receive one-on-one qualitative evaluation of your exam
- Observe seven (7) or more cases and submit observation forms
- Complete a final mock co-mediation
- Co-mediate eight (8) or more cases with a certified mediator
- Complete twelve (12) or more hours of additional education
Step 3: Mediate
You are now eligible to mediate conflicts between co-workers, consumer and businesses, landlords and tenants, friends, and neighbors. To remain an active DRC mediator, you must mediate at least 2 cases and complete 10 hours of continuing education per year, and participate in a mediator practitioner review with DRC staff at least every two years.

Step 4: Advance + Enrich Your Training
All volunteer mediators are encouraged to attend free in-service trainings hosted by the DRC. Past in-services training topics have included dealing with allegations of abuse, developing the art of co-mediating, effective power-balancing methods, sharing experiences dealing with difficult clients, helping parents consider the best interests of their children, and many more topics.
If you are interested in mediating more complex cases, you may choose to do the following:

If you are interested in mediating more complex cases, you may choose to do the following:
- Complete the Family Mediation Training to mediate cases involving separating couples, divorce, parenting plans or property division.
- Complete the Multi-Party Mediation Training to mediate cases with groups of three or more
